  • A request from Pastor Mary:

Pentecost Sunday is May 24...if you'd like to be one of our many special readers READING IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE from the Book of Acts 2:1-21, please contact the church office, stphilips.sv@gmail.com  or 831-438-4360.

Here is the reading in English--we can help you find a translation in another language if needed:

1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.
4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem.
6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.
7Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?
9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
11Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’
12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’
13But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’
14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say.
15Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning.
16No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
17 “In the last days it will be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
       in those days I will pour out my Spirit;
         and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show portents in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and smoky mist.
20 The sun shall be turned to darkness
       and the moon to blood,
before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.
21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Pastoral Care:  Will you be the hands & feet of Christ ?
If you have ever had someone call on you when you were in need, or had someone not do so,  you know how important this can be.   Sometimes folks are not able to get to church, even though they would like to.  But we are the church and we can go to them. This may involve a get well note, a phone contact, a personal visit, an anointing with oil with prayers for healing, or taking Holy Communion to a person’s home or to the hospital. You could sign up for any or all of these ministries. You may want to do this frequently or occasionally. Or only go on hospital visits, or phone calls only. You define your ministry as the Spirit has gifted you. If you would  like to participate in this simple but meaningful ministry, contact Elizabeth, at stphilips.sv@gmail.com or 438.4360.

    Training is Happening!
Training to be a Eucharistic Visitor, one who takes Holy Communion to others, is happening on March 7, 9am - 12 noon, at St. Philip's Church in Scotts Valley.  Join us for this vital and well done training.   Jesus sent them out "two by two", and so will we. Taking communion in pairs more than doubles the satisfaction for both the recipient and the givers. Be a part of a 2-person team!
Cost is $10, which we can cover, if needed. Just ask. Please contact Elizabeth at the above if you want to get in on this exciting ministry.

Looking for a simple way to help the hungry?
Here’s one:   bring your empty egg cartons and clean produce bags to the church. They can be left in the office, or given directly to Sally Sutter or Jane Ellis.

    Information:

Annual Meeting and Potluck Lunch (Noon to 1:00 p.m.)

Annual Meeting and Potluck lunch following the 10:00 a.m. service (Meeting begins promptly at Noon.)
We have a VERY SIMPLE, streamlined "agenda":
    • eat and fellowship
    • present our thanks to our outgoing Vestry and Delegates and vote on 2015 Vestry and Delegates to convention
    • discuss Q and A style any questions from written reports and budget status
    • closing and clean-up

Regarding the Candidates and Voting at the Annual Meeting, below is our "slate" for 2015.  Please note that Canons of the National Episcopal Church state that there are absolutely NO PROXY votes in ANY Episcopal Church election (i.e. no "absentee voting").  This is for a theological purpose:  it is the belief of the Episcopal Church that BEING PRESENT for discussion, community-building, and full understanding actually allows the presence of the Holy Spirit to help in decision-making.  We don't actually have any big, controversial voting happening, but we do highly value everyone's presence when raising up our Vestry/Ministry leaders, and hope you'll be able to be there from noon to -1 p.m. for food, fellowship and voting!

Note that we have one less Delegate to Diocesan Convention this year, as our Average Sunday Attendance has dropped below the level for receiving four delegates and one alternate.  Therefore we have three delegates and one alternate.

Our Vestry is designed to be seven to eleven people.  Victoria Dobson has agreed to "run" again for a one year term as she needed to take one of her term year's off.  We have our Treasurer, Jane Ellis, who had not been a voting member, nominated to be a voting member for a three year term, and we have one new member, Lori Kintz, for a three year term.  That will make a total of eight Vestry members going forward. There is still plenty of room for up to three more "write in" candidates, nominated from the floor (you must have agreement from the candidate before nominating, and a second.)

Click here for our Annual Reports, written by Vestry and Staff, along with our 2015 Budget, approved by the Vestry January 11, 2015 (with some additional improvements by the Treasurer based on increases in pledges--thank you all!).  Please read over these documents and come prepared for questions/reflections.

    Candidates for Vestry:

Victoria Dobson (1 year term) _____

Jane Ellis (3 year term)           _____

Lori Kintz (3 year term)          _____

    Scout Sunday:
We will have Boy Scouts visiting from throughout the area.  Tim Johnson is organizing some special helpers.  Along with our Scout visitors, Middle and High School youth are invited to remain in church to hear the homily message on: Service as a Way of Being, not just "DOING".
Acolytes are also needed (Victoria Dobson and family are not able to come help, as Victoria's dad passed away recently and they are still managing things around that. Please pray for them.)  Scout Acolytes of St. Philip's are welcome to wear just their uniforms and not the white alb if they prefer.

Following the service we will visit with Scouts who are hosting coffee hour in the Foyer, then we have a potluck luncheon of the whole congregation, including youth, and a short business meeting.
